We have observed that most people start a business with a very wide niche – thinking that a wider niche will get you more clients, which means more sales. And we fell into this trap ourselves! When we started years ago as Love Your Small Business, our ‘niche’ was all women entrepreneurs. Now there are a lot of women entrepreneurs so it seems logical, but having a wide niche didn’t work for us and we found ourselves really struggling to get a consistent flow of our ideal clients.
Why narrowing your niche helps you bring in more clients and make more sales
We knew for a long time that we needed to refine our niche – and finally took the plunge into working specifically with Mums building a business in part-time hours. And the result – the clients (and the sales) started flowing!
Why is this? Well – with a refined niche, it’s much easier for your customers to say ‘yes’ to buying from you. Your ideal client knows that you understand them – their challenges, wants, and struggles because you work specifically with this type of person and have solved their challenges for others before. You can offer specific solutions as experts with a narrow niche, and even better, you’ll find there is much less competition in a narrow niche.
It is also easier to create products and services. Once you have narrowed your niche and have a specific client group, you know what your clients want, need, what they’re willing to pay for and create solutions that speak directly to them. Because you have narrowed your niche, you can easily get access to direct feedback to create solutions for your audience.
Ever heard of the halo effect? Once you’ve become an expert in one particular area, it will be easier to broaden out, pick another niche and it will be easier to build credibility on that niche. It’s a formula that works, better than starting as jack of all trades, master of none.
